This connector is designed for Rough Cut lumber NOT nominal lumber (most common). This will only fit fence rails that measures an actual 2×4″. If you have a nominal rail measuring 1-1/2×3-1/2″ you will need anFB24Z Fence Bracket

Simpson Strong-Tie FB and FBR fence brackets make the connection between fence rails and posts simple and strong. The FB24R is designed for use with rough cut 2×4’s which are sometimes referred to as “old lumber” or “true 2×4’s” meaning the lumber dimensions are an actual 2″ by 4″.
